Bruce Fretts

Currently Senior Articles Editor at Closer Weekly, Bruce Fretts has been contributing TV reviews to the WBGO Journal since 1999. He first became involved with the station when he pledged to cohost an hour of Morning Jazz with Gary Walker and Doug Doyle.

Fretts has reviewed a wide variety of programs for WBGO, including documentaries about jazz legends Ella Fitzgerald, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday as well as series like Justified and Breaking Bad.

A native of Arlington, Va., Fretts became interested in jazz while taking a course on the music's history at the University of Virginia. After graduation, he moved to New York City and was hired as an assistant editor for American Heritage magazine.

Fretts worked as a Critic at Entertainment Weekly from 1991-2003. He penned TV Guide’s wildly popular “Cheers & Jeers” column for 10 years and served as the magazine’s Articles Editor until 2014.

A die-hard Mets fan, Fretts has written articles for MLB Insiders Club as well as the official All-Star Game and World Series programs. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, The New York Daily News, Fast Company and Emmy magazines and on,,, and

Fretts lives in New Jersey with his children, Jed and Olive.
